How to Set Up a Second WhatsApp Account

Separate work and personal chats: options for a second WhatsApp account on one phone, and how to verify it with a virtual number.

Updated: · 2 min read

Many people want to keep work chats out of their personal WhatsApp. A second account needs a second phone number, and that is where a virtual number helps.

Options for a second account

  • WhatsApp Business app: install it next to regular WhatsApp. Each app uses its own number.
  • Dual app / clone feature: many Android phones can run two copies of an app.
  • Multiple accounts in WhatsApp: recent versions let you add a second account in Settings, each with its own number.

Verify the second number

  1. Open the WhatsApp number page and choose a country with stock and a good success rate.
  2. Enter the number in WhatsApp and choose SMS (not a call).
  3. Copy the code from your dashboard and confirm.

WhatsApp may ask for the SMS code again later, for example on a new phone. Activation numbers are temporary, so turn on two-step verification and back up your chats.

Keep the account working

  • Settings → Account → Two-step verification: set a PIN and an email.
  • Do not reinstall the app or switch phones often.
  • Avoid sending bulk messages to people who do not have your number saved; that is the most common reason accounts get restricted.

When to use your own SIM instead

If the second account is your main business line that customers will use for years, a dedicated SIM or a long-term number is the safer choice. Virtual activation numbers are best for short-term or secondary accounts.
